This free lorem ipsum generator produces dummy text for mockups, wireframes and layout tests: pick paragraphs, sentences or an exact number of words, choose classic Latin or readable English filler, and copy it as plain text, HTML paragraphs or Markdown. No signup and nothing stored.
Dummy text has one job: to show how real content will sit on a page before the real content exists. Latin lorem ipsum is the standard because its letter frequencies and word lengths resemble English without the meaning distracting a reviewer. The English option is for clients who find Latin off-putting, and for testing features like search and line-wrapping that behave differently on real words.
How to use
- Set how much text you need and whether that number is paragraphs, sentences or words.
- Pick Latin lorem ipsum or readable English filler. Keep “Start with Lorem ipsum…” on if the text needs to be recognisable as placeholder at a glance.
- Choose the output format: plain text for design tools, HTML paragraphs to paste into a template, Markdown for a CMS or README.
- Copy or download. Press Generate again for a different arrangement of the same length.
- Replace it with real copy before launch. Placeholder text that ships is indexed by search engines like any other text.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
It is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), a text about the theory of ethics. The scrambling makes it meaningless on purpose. Typesetters have used it as filler since the 1500s, and Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and then Aldus PageMaker in the 1980s made it the industry default.
Why use dummy text instead of real content?
Because real content is rarely ready when the layout is being designed, and because readable text pulls reviewers into editing the words instead of judging the design. Placeholder text keeps the conversation on hierarchy, spacing and flow. Once the design is settled, real copy should replace it as early as possible, since real headlines and paragraphs are almost always a different length.
When is readable English filler better than Latin?
When the mockup will be shown to people who are not designers and might think the Latin is a mistake, when you are testing text features such as search, hyphenation or a screen reader, and when the layout depends on realistic sentence rhythm. Latin is better when you want it unmistakably clear that the text is not final.
Is there a limit on length?
Up to 100 paragraphs or 5,000 words per generation, which is more than any page needs. For stress-testing a database or a long document, generate several times or use the word mode at its maximum.
Does dummy text hurt SEO?
Only if it ships. Search engines index whatever is on a live page, so lorem ipsum on a published site reads as thin or broken content and can be reported as such. Keep placeholder text on staging, and check templates for leftover filler before a launch.
Dummy text that behaves like real text
Good placeholder text should match the length and shape of what will replace it. A hero headline is four to eight words, not a paragraph; a product description is 40 to 80 words; a blog intro is two or three paragraphs. Generate by words when you know the target length, and by paragraphs when you are filling a column. If the final copy will include long unbreakable strings (URLs, part numbers), add one, because those are what break layouts.
Alternatives to lorem ipsum
Themed generators (bacon, hipster, corporate ipsum) exist for fun and occasionally for tone. For serious work the useful alternatives are real draft copy, even rough, and the readable English filler here. Both surface problems that Latin hides: awkward line breaks on real words, headings that are too long, and calls to action that do not fit their buttons.
