Select AVIF fileHigher keeps more detail and makes larger files. 80 to 90 is the range most people cannot tell from the original.
This runs entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your machine and nothing is uploaded. Need test files? Try our free sample files.
You saved an image from a website, it came down as .avif, and nothing on your computer will open it. That is the normal experience: browsers adopted AVIF quickly because it halves file sizes, while Photoshop, Preview, Windows Photos and nearly every upload form did not follow. Converting to JPG gets you a file that works everywhere.
Because browsers cannot write JPG, this one runs on our server: the file is converted in memory and sent straight back. It is never written to disk, never logged and never stored.
How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Drop your AVIF files onto the box above, or click it to choose from your computer. Up to 20 at once.
- Set the quality if you want to trade size against detail. 85 is a good default; below about 70 the loss starts to be visible.
- Download each converted file, or pick them up one by one from the list.
What changes when you convert AVIF to JPG
JPG has no transparency. Anything transparent in your AVIF is composited onto a white background, which is the usual expectation but worth knowing if your image was designed to sit on a colour.
Both formats are lossy, so this is a re-encode and a small amount of quality is lost in the process. Convert from the highest-quality original you have rather than from a file that has already been through several rounds.
AVIF and JPG compared
| AVIF | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | AV1 Image File Format | JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group |
| Extension | .avif | .jpg, .jpeg |
| MIME type | image/avif | image/jpeg |
| Compression | Lossy | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
AVIF: Built on the AV1 video codec, typically half the size of JPG at the same quality, with transparency and wide colour. Browsers can display it, but almost no desktop software can open or edit it, which is why converting out of AVIF is such a common need.
JPG: Lossy compression tuned for photographs, supported by every device made in the last thirty years. No transparency, and repeated re-saving degrades the image, so keep an original.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Drop your .avif file onto the box on this page and the .jpg file is ready to download in a second or two. There is no signup, no email, no watermark and no file limit beyond about 4 MB per upload — larger images are re-encoded smaller in your browser first, and the page says so when that happens.
Is this AVIF to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely, with no account, no trial and no watermark on the output. We are a consultancy and these tools exist because we needed them ourselves; there is nothing to buy on this page.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
This one has to run on our server, because browsers cannot write JPG. The file is converted in memory and returned immediately — it is never written to disk, never logged and never stored. If that is not acceptable for your file, use a desktop tool instead.
Will converting to JPG reduce the quality?
JPG has no transparency. Anything transparent in your AVIF is composited onto a white background, which is the usual expectation but worth knowing if your image was designed to sit on a colour.
Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
Yes, up to 20 files in one go. Drop them all onto the box together and each one appears in the results list with its own download button.
