This free AVIF to BMP converter turns your .avif images into .bmp files. AVIF is what a modern site serves to save bandwidth, and what almost no desktop application will open. People usually arrive here having saved one from a web page and found that Photoshop, Preview, Windows Photos and every stock uploader refuse it.
Because browsers cannot write BMP, this one runs on our server: the file is converted in memory and sent straight back. It is never written to disk, never logged and never stored.
How to convert AVIF to BMP

What changes when you convert AVIF to BMP
BMP has no transparency. Anything transparent in your AVIF is composited onto a white background, which is the usual expectation but worth knowing if your image was designed to sit on a colour.
BMP is lossless, but it cannot restore what AVIF already discarded. The output will be larger than the input and no sharper — you are preserving the current state, not recovering the original.
AVIF and BMP compared
| AVIF | BMP | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | AV1 Image File Format | Windows Bitmap |
| Extension | .avif | .bmp |
| MIME type | image/avif | image/bmp |
| Compression | Lossy | Lossless |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
AVIF: Built on the AV1 video codec, typically half the size of JPG at the same quality, with transparency and wide colour. Browsers can display it, but almost no desktop software can open or edit it, which is why converting out of AVIF is such a common need.
BMP: Uncompressed raw pixels, which makes the files enormous and the format trivial to parse. Mostly encountered coming out of legacy Windows software and scanners.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to BMP?
Drop your .avif file onto the box on this page and the .bmp file is ready to download in a second or two. There is no signup, no email, no watermark and no file limit beyond about 4 MB per upload — larger images are re-encoded smaller in your browser first, and the page says so when that happens.
Is this AVIF to BMP converter free?
Yes, completely, with no account, no trial and no watermark on the output. We are a consultancy and these tools exist because we needed them ourselves; there is nothing to buy on this page.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
This one has to run on our server, because browsers cannot write BMP. The file is converted in memory and returned immediately — it is never written to disk, never logged and never stored. If that is not acceptable for your file, use a desktop tool instead.
Will converting to BMP reduce the quality?
BMP has no transparency. Anything transparent in your AVIF is composited onto a white background, which is the usual expectation but worth knowing if your image was designed to sit on a colour.
Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
Yes, up to 20 files in one go. Drop them all onto the box together and each one appears in the results list with its own download button.
