PDF to Word Converter — Extract Text to .docx, In Your Browser
Turn a text PDF into an editable Word document: paragraphs and headings extracted in your browser. Text only, and honest about it.
The PDF is read and the Word file written entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded. Turning documents into structured, searchable data at volume is a job for a pipeline, not a converter. See our document automation work.

This free PDF to Word converter extracts the text of a PDF into an editable .docx file, in your browser, with nothing uploaded. Paragraphs are rebuilt from the positions of the text on each page, headings are recognised from their larger font, and each page becomes a section. For contracts, reports, letters and articles, the text documents most people need to edit, it produces a clean Word file in seconds.
It is deliberately a text converter, and the page says so before you start. Images, tables, columns, footnotes and the original fonts are not reproduced, and a scanned PDF (a picture of a page) yields nothing because there is no text in it to extract. Services that promise perfect layout conversion do it on their servers with your document; this one gives you the words, keeps the document on your device, and is honest about the rest.
How to use
- Choose a PDF up to 25 MB. If it is password-protected, remove the password first.
- Press Convert. The page count, paragraph count and word count appear when it finishes and the .docx downloads.
- Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and tidy the headings; the converter marks the obvious ones.
- If the status says no text was found, the PDF is scanned. It needs OCR, which is a different tool.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep the layout, images and tables?
No. It extracts text into paragraphs with headings and page breaks. Tables become lines of text, images are dropped, multi-column pages are read column by column where the PDF's internal order allows. For a document that is mostly prose that is exactly what you want; for a designed brochure, use the PDF converter to export pages as images instead.
Why did I get an empty or nearly empty document?
The PDF contains images of text rather than text, which is what scanners and some “print to PDF” tools produce. There is nothing to extract without optical character recognition. Adobe Acrobat, macOS Preview (recent versions) and Google Drive can OCR a scan; convert that result here if you want a .docx.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is parsed with an open-source library (pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses) and the Word file is written in your browser. Nothing leaves your device, which makes this safe for contracts and confidential reports.
Why are some paragraphs split or merged wrongly?
PDFs store positioned text runs, not paragraphs; the converter infers paragraphs from the gaps between lines. Unusual spacing, drop caps, pull quotes and text boxes can fool it. The result is meant to be edited, and a wrong split is a keystroke to fix.
Can it convert Word to PDF?
Not here; the browser's print dialog does that well (File → Print → Save as PDF in any word processor). This tool covers the direction that is hard without software: getting editable text back out of a PDF.
What a PDF actually contains
A PDF is a page description: draw this glyph at this position in this font. It has no concept of a paragraph, a heading or a table; those exist only in the original document. Every PDF to Word converter therefore guesses structure from geometry, and the guesses get worse as layouts get more designed. Text-first documents convert well; magazine layouts do not, whatever the service promises.
Beyond one document
If the job is extracting text from hundreds of PDFs into a database, a search index or an AI knowledge base, the per-file converter is the wrong shape. That is a pipeline: batch extraction, OCR for scans, structure detection tuned to your document types, and validation. It is a common first step in the knowledge-system work we do.
