Higher keeps more detail and makes larger files. 80 to 90 is the range most people cannot tell from the original.

AVIF has to be written on our server, so the file is uploaded, converted in memory and sent straight back. It is never written to disk and never stored. Need test files? Try our free sample files.

This free WebP to AVIF converter turns your .webp images into .avif files. WebP is what most image pipelines now output. Browsers handle it everywhere, but plenty of desktop software, print workflows and older systems still do not.

Because browsers cannot write AVIF, this one runs on our server: the file is converted in memory and sent straight back. It is never written to disk, never logged and never stored.

How to convert WebP to AVIF

  1. Drop your WebP files onto the box above, or click it to choose from your computer. Up to 20 at once.
  2. Set the quality if you want to trade size against detail. 85 is a good default; below about 70 the loss starts to be visible.
  3. Download each converted file, or pick them up one by one from the list.

What changes when you convert WebP to AVIF

Both formats are lossy, so this is a re-encode and a small amount of quality is lost in the process. Convert from the highest-quality original you have rather than from a file that has already been through several rounds.

WebP: Google's web format: roughly 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at comparable quality, with transparency and animation. Supported by every current browser.

AVIF: Built on the AV1 video codec, typically half the size of JPG at the same quality, with transparency and wide colour. Browsers can display it, but almost no desktop software can open or edit it, which is why converting out of AVIF is such a common need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WebP to AVIF?

Drop your .webp file onto the box on this page and the .avif file is ready to download in a second or two. There is no signup, no email, no watermark and no file limit beyond about 4 MB per upload — larger images are re-encoded smaller in your browser first, and the page says so when that happens.

Is this WebP to AVIF converter free?

Yes, completely, with no account, no trial and no watermark on the output. We are a consultancy and these tools exist because we needed them ourselves; there is nothing to buy on this page.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

This one has to run on our server, because browsers cannot write AVIF. The file is converted in memory and returned immediately — it is never written to disk, never logged and never stored. If that is not acceptable for your file, use a desktop tool instead.

Will converting to AVIF reduce the quality?

Both formats are lossy, so this is a re-encode and a small amount of quality is lost in the process. Convert from the highest-quality original you have rather than from a file that has already been through several rounds.

Can I convert several WebP files at once?

Yes, up to 20 files in one go. Drop them all onto the box together and each one appears in the results list with its own download button.
