Sample PSD Files — Download Free Layered Photoshop Files
Adobe Photoshop Document · .psd · MIME type image/vnd.adobe.photoshop
Download a sample PSD file that is actually a PSD. Most files offered under that name online are either a designer's copyrighted artwork or a JPEG with the extension changed, and the second kind fails the moment anything tries to read the layer stack. These are written byte by byte against the Adobe Photoshop File Format Specification: an 8BPS header, an RGB colour-mode section, image resources, a real layer and mask information section, and PackBits-compressed channel data.
Each document carries four named layers — Background, Navy Circle, Pine Bar and Birch Band — with a full alpha channel on each, plus a flattened composite so readers that ignore layers still show the right picture. We verify every file by reopening it with psd-tools, an independent parser, and checking that the layer names, colour mode, bit depth and rendered pixels are what we intended.

What people test with sample PSD files
- Layer parsing and PSD-to-web conversion pipelines
- Design-file upload validation and MIME sniffing
- Thumbnail and preview generation from design sources
- Asset management systems that index design files
- Testing that a large binary upload survives intact
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real PSD or a renamed image?
A real one. It is written against the published Photoshop file format specification, with a genuine layer and mask information section containing four named layers and their alpha channels. Before publishing we reopen each file with psd-tools and assert the dimensions, colour mode, bit depth, layer names and rendered pixel values. A renamed JPEG would fail every one of those checks.
Will these open in Photoshop?
Yes, and in GIMP, Affinity Photo, Krita and Photopea, all of which read the same specification. You will see the four layers in the layers panel and can toggle each one independently.
Can I use these commercially?
Yes. The artwork is simple geometry we generated ourselves — no stock photography, no third-party fonts embedded, no copyright attached to anyone else. Use them in commercial products, test suites and public repositories with no attribution required.
Why is the PSD so much larger than a JPEG of the same picture?
Because it stores four separate layers at full canvas size, each with its own alpha channel, plus a flattened composite — and PackBits is a run-length scheme, not a photographic compressor. That is normal for design sources and is exactly why PSD uploads are a useful test of size limits.
Are these PSD files safe to download?
Yes. Every file is generated by our own open script from scratch — nothing is scraped or user-uploaded — and contains no scripts, macros or executables. The SHA-256 of each file is published on this page so you can verify what you received.
Can I use the sample PSD files commercially?
Yes. They are free for any purpose, including commercial products, test suites, demos and redistribution, with no attribution required. There is nothing to license and no one to ask.
Can I hotlink these files or use them in CI?
Yes. Every link is a stable direct URL over HTTPS with Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * and long cache headers, so curl, wget, fetch() and test runners can pull them directly. A JSON index of every file is linked from each page (see the command-line section).
